On the plus side, this is the only book I am aware of which concentrates on the arts of Madagascar. This paucity of material on the subject could could be because the funerary art in question is exceedingly uncommercial.....being large, produced (exclusively?) for funerals, associated with gravesites, positioned outdoors (and therefore subject to significant perishing in the elements), and not ideal for museum erxhibition. The fact that tha art is uncommercial doen't make it any less fascinating, and this is one of my most browsed books. However, the book does lose a star for some strange photo selections, some very small photos, for being in French, and for being exclusively in b/w . (In 2005 ? Seriously ?). With some patience, I have seen used copies at about sixty bucks in 2013, and the rarity value of published Madagascar art alone is worth that investment.
